Applications Engineer, Electric Current Measurement, Power Electronics

GMW Associates works with customers providing state-of-the art measuring equipment in electric current & magnetic field. Our customers are from a range of industrial, government, and academic cutting-edge research laboratories. GMW has been assisting customers in magnetics-based applications for 40 years in consumer electronics, automotive, healthcare, and accelerator physics. We are a team of approximately 20 people and the company is exclusively owned by employees.

The product you will be responsible for as an Applications Engineer will be Power Electronics Test & Measurement equipment, primarily the measurement of electric current. A significant part of work focuses on measurements and testing of hybrid-electric drives.

The position requires measurements in our San Carlos Lab. While some remote work may be possible, it is assumed most of work will be done at GMW.

As Applications Engineer you will:

  • Provide technical support for manufacturing, production and, Applications Laboratory
  • Provide sustaining engineering and troubleshooting on existing products supporting sales and metrology departments.
  • Attend and contribute to technical conferences provide feedback on customer requirements and new developments in electrification.
  • Develop & write product test procedures, application notes, and specifications.
  • Interpret customer specifications to define requirements for power measurement and systems design.
  • Able to present current measurement solutions to large and small groups.
  • Interface with customers on the telephone and in person

Basic Qualifications: 

  • BSEE or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in Power Electronics – Instrumentation experience, power analyzers, ‘scopes, measurement probes.
  • Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB or Python
  • The ability to travel up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • MSEE or PhD., EE or Physics
  • Experience in one of the following end markets: Electric Vehicles, Motor Drive, Batteries, Power Supplies
  • 4 years relevant industry experience
  • Test & Measurement experience with products used in power conversion applications.
  • Database Management Skills
  • Fundamental knowledge of power electronics topologies (AC/DC, DC/DC & DC/AC), switching waveforms and their impact on magnetics
  • Experience working with higher voltage and high frequency power converters
  • Awareness of UL and CE electrical safety requirements and EMC requirements relevant to the design of power converters

Salary commensurate with qualifications, the expected range for the position is $130k-$200k/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Project Engineer, Magnetics & Magnet Systems

GMW has been assisting customers in magnetics-based applications for 40 years in consumer electronics, automotive, healthcare, and accelerator physics. We are a team of approximately 20 people and company is exclusively owned by employees.

The product you will be responsible for as an Project Engineer will be Electromagnet systems and their applications. These applications include but not limited to Spintronics, Magnetic Resonance and Magnetic Memory. Customers use GMW Electromagnets as base for experimentation in MOKE, FMR and EPR among others.

The position requires measurements in our San Carlos Lab. While some remote work may be possible, it is assumed most of work will be done at GMW.

As Project engineer you will oversee GMW Magnet systems, including:

  • Review accessories such as power supplies, chillers, field measurement equipment
  • Presentation of magnet performance – excitation & uniformity data, drawings, facility requirements, as per customer requests
  • Assist in writing test procedures, application notes and specifications.
  • Oversee GMW Magnetic Mapping results as relates to specific contracts.
  • Attend and contribute to technical conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Physics, Materials Science or equivalent
  • 3 years’ experience in industry
  • Experience with Magnetic Modeling (FEA)
  • Experience with python, MATLAB or LabVIEW
  • Ability to travel ~15%.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD Physics with extensive magnetics coursework
  • Writing FEA scripts
  • Some experience with mechanical drawings – autocad, solidworks preferred.
  • Project Management Experience
